Outriders is an upcoming third-person looter-shooter developed by People Can Fly, the team that created classics such as Painkiller, Gears of War and Bulletstorm and published by Square Enix. It will officially be released on 1st April 2021 but until then, you can download the free demo to give this action-packed game a try.
The premise of Outriders revolves around humanity’s efforts to colonise the planet of Enoch. Players are part of the expedition team who are caught in the energy storm, known as “The Anomaly”, which kills many of the colonists but also grants some superpowers. As expected, your character happens to be one of those imbued with these powers.
After waking up from a 30-year long cryostasis, players will then discover that Enoch is now a war-torn planet with multiple factions vying for power. It is up to you to turn the tide of war and bring peace to the planet.
Pick Your Powers
Players will be able to achieve this on their own or with the help of two friends in co-op. If you have played other looter-shooters such as Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s The Division, Bungie’s Destiny or Gearbox Software’s Borderlands series before, Outriders will be familiar as it involves hours of exploring, gunning and looting.
Speaking of gunning, as an “Altered”, players aren’t just limited to conventional firearms as they can easily change the landscape of the battlefield with their powers. With four classes to choose from, players will easily find a class that suits their playstyle.
The four classes available are:
- Devastator, the best choice for tanks as it focuses on close-range attacks and skills that increase armour.
- Pyromancer, a medium-range class that is great for crowd control by inflicting burning damage to foes.
- Technomancer, the class for players who prefer to play a support role as this class can heal allies and pick enemies off using gadgets.
- Trickster, a close-range class that can teleport behind enemies, slow them down and do massive amounts of damage.
One of the biggest differences between Outriders and other looter-shooters is how it is more action-oriented. Players are expected to dispatch foes quickly instead of playing it like a cover-shooter. This is because each class has a different healing mechanic that activates by damaging enemies. For example, the Devastator recovers health by killing enemies in close range while the Pyromancer recovers health by killing enemies marked by their skills.
Another similarity it shares with other looter-shooters is the depth of character customisation. Throughout skirmishes and battles, players will find plenty of armour and weapons that can be modified to fit their playstyle like a glove.
